PETA’s Thanksgiving ad, submitted to air during the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade, was rejected by NBC.

OMG, was NBC’s whole “Green Week” thing just a temporary marketing tactic, rather than a genuine commitment to the health of our planet?

Montgomery County (Maryland) Animal Shelter is closing today. You can adopt for free today between 12-4. They will be euthanizing all animals without a home! Go and save a life! 30 cats and 80 dogs left. Please, re-post.

Five Lessons From FOWD ’08:

This article by Viget is absolutely full of great thoughts and ideas about the correct approach to design and how to go about becoming an expert and refining your craft.

Here are my favorite take-aways:

Taking a problem-solving approach to design can improve projects and client interactions immensely.
Asking “Does this accomplish X, X, and X?” instead of “Do you like this?” shifts the conversation away from opinions and onto results. (Something I need to keep in mind every day in my work.)
Be the Expert: “Be ready to answer ‘why?’ about your design decisions. Also be willing to admit which of your decisions were less important—allowing members to help adapt your ideas.”
Be the Expert: “Have a process. Being the expert means explaining your methodology up front and moving through a defined process. Experts need to have a sane, carefully-considered process behind their designs. Clients should expect to hear about it before design begins.”
Creativity is not “My Job”: “…if you think you have a monopoly on ideas, visuals, or features, you’re dangerous. Designers are trained to manage creativity, but by no means do we have the market cornered on creative ideas. All team members should be able to propose ideas, with the caveat that suggestions must revolve around solutions and can be discussed from a problem-solving perspective.”
Understand Cause and Effect: “When you start designing, design without limits: brainstorming anything -goes produces unexpected and wonderful results, and it’s a hallmark of really creative design. Just remember that big thinking requires caution, because it ends up dictating development decisions, client expectations, and project scale. It’s your job as a designer to understand the cause and effect of design decisions—and mention possible speed bumps or implications of what you’re proposing.”

These aren’t all word-for-word quotes, but instead synopses of the statements and sections that I liked.

Photos from a French nuclear test in 1970.

These are four scanned pictures of hardcopies I possess of the French nuclear test codenamed Licorne, which was fired on August 24, 1970 . The French army had these pictures taken on site. The pictures were readily available at the time at Tahiti and Moruroa military base, and mine have been quite degraded. I scanned them and tried to restore them.
